So what exactly is Kaiju Big Battel? Hmm… Kaiju is Japanese for “Mysterious Beast”. An example of Kaiju would be Godzilla. According to the book, Kaiju Big Battel: A Practical Guide to Giant City-Crushing Monsters, Kaiju can grow and shrink to any size. So these “beasts” can be 50 feet high or the size of a normal human being. Get it? But now you want to known about the Big Battel part, and why the heck do I keep spelling Battel wrong? Battel was originally misspelled on a T-shirt; people thought it was funny, so they ended up keeping it. You really need to go to a Kaiju Big Battel event or purchase the DVD to realize exactly what the Big Battel is ALL about. Kaiju Big Battel is described as a “live event series that revolves around tournament-style performances, which are a tongue-in-cheek hybrid of American pro-wrestling, Japanese-monster-movie mayhem, and lowbrow pop culture.” Sounds right up my alley!
I was actually in an underground wrestling league back in my high school and college years. We mainly did it for fun…I enjoyed the cheesy acting and interviews more than the actual wrestling part. But when some of the members thought that cutting their foreheads because it would look really great on camera…I decided I had had enough. To my knowledge…those guys could still be wrestling in their parent’s basement. I’m not really sure.
Kaiju Big Battel is more dedicated to the performance, which is why I find it so entertaining. The troupe is made up of former art school students and is based in the Boston area. Most of the events take place in the Northeast. However, a few weeks ago, Kaiju Big Battel put on an event in Los Angeles. So be on the lookout, because they could be coming to a city near you.
The Big Battel was created so that the Kaiju around planet earth would have a viable way to let their aggression out, without leveling entire cities in the process. These matches take place within a normal wrestling ring. However, during volatile events (where the Kaiju Commissioner believes spectators need extra protection) the ring is fitted with a cage. With over 30 competitors, the league is broken down into four distinct groups. Team Space Bug is known as the intergalactic menace of Kaiju Big Battel. Uchu Chu leads this insect-like group. The Rogues are the free agents of Kaiju Big Battel. They can hardly ever be trusted and are only out for themselves. One of the more popular Rogues is Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle. The Evilest Evil of Kaiju Big Battel is known as Dr. Cube’s Posse. Dr. Cube is a maniacal scientist whose main goal is world domination.
Everyone needs a hero, and Kaiju Big Battel has there own group of Heroes. They lead normal lives, but show up when help, and a hero, is needed. Some of the most popular Heroes included the Plantain Twins and the Silver Potato.
Coolness factor: 10/10 So why is Kaiju Big Battel so damn captivating? I have watched the DVD, but not yet had the opportunity to attend an event. I must say, the wrestling moves are not as “crisp” as something you’d see on a WWE telecast. But, it’s not really about the wrestling. It’s an event built around the performance. The story lines and the amazing outfits are what Kaiju Big Battel is about. Considering that it often takes months to construct each costume, and some outfits cost well into the thousands of dollars to assemble, they are a marvel to just examine. You’ll never see the Sky Deviler in WWE. And you’ll never see anything as freaky as Dusto Bunny running around a wrestling ring, unless it’s at a Big Battel event. You can even own a piece of two recently deceased Kaijus. The “meat” of Midori no Kaiju and Multimoog are being sold on Kaiju.com. The official site of Kaiju Big Battel has loads of merchandise, including shirts, a book, and a hilarious DVD. If you’re unable to attend an event, the DVD is as close as you’ll get…and Dino Kang Jr. blood won’t splatter you. YOu can also check out the site to watch some of the live events that aren't included on the DVD. Unfortunately, there hasn’t yet been a video game developed, nor are there any Kaiju Big Battel action figures available. We can always wish… Thanks to Kaiju.com for use of all of the great pictures! |
